  An important message from
The Co-operators

As you prepare for the potential arrival of a hurricane and related storm activity such as wind, rainfall and storm surge on coastal areas, we encourage you to take the following precautions to stay safe and protect your property.

In advance of storm arrival:
Follow directions from your local authorities and monitor the situation in your area.
Become familiar with the steps to take in case of a power outage. Prepare
emergency supply kits for your home and car (include cash in case ATMs are not accessible), and keep a battery-powered or crank radio on hand as power outages can occur.
Store important papers in watertight containers and have a record of your valuables in a safe place.
Move high-value items and property to higher areas of your home.
Check the drainage system (storm sewer) on your street. If it is blocked, report the condition to the authorities or try to clear the area around the sewer entrance. If you live in a rural area, check culverts and other waterways and remove any blockages if it is safe to do so.
Make sure your sump pump is working properly. Consider installing a secondary backup pump in the event of a power failure. Make sure the batteries in your backup pump are fully charged.
Avoid banks of rivers, streams and ocean shorelines which may become unstable and dangerous, as well as washed-out roadways.
Remove or secure outdoor items such as lawn furniture that could become wind-borne.
Clear eavestroughs, drains, and sewers of debris.
If you own a watercraft, be sure it is out of water and secured in a building.
If your property has sustained water damage† and is insured with The Co-operators, please contact us as soon as possible at the number below, to discuss coverage.
